Cheesecake Season

CheesecakeSome people prefer winter sports over summer sports; I prefer winter cooking over summer cooking. I look forward to the fall chill, as it brings with it the scent of cooling cheesecakes and roasting chickens in the air…
Thanksgiving always symbolizes the beginning of the cold weather cooking season to me, and although we don’t have the requisite opening feast here in Japan, it seems that I fell into step anyway. Last night, while most Americans were waking up with there post-Thanksgiving hangover, I was in the kitchen with my son making the first cheesecakes of the season. His ever abundant energy was put to good use in crushing the crackers for the crust and in stirring together the filling. He was a great help with the measuring, and with working the food processor as well. Unfortunately, bedtime came too soon, and I was forced to complete the cooking on my own.
While he fell asleep, I put together a large chocolate swirl , one small chocolate, a small plain cheesecake. A few hours later, I had three cheesecakes cooling on a rack in the kitchen, and I was able to join him upstairs.
Luckily for me, due to the rather poor state of cheesecake making in Japan, mine usually go over rather well. So the large cheesecake goes with us to dinner at a friend’s house tonight, and the others I am going hide in the fridge for later…
Tonight will be kind of like Groundhog Day for me. If the cheesecake comes out and is applauded, then we will have a long and fruitful season.
Wish me luck.
